Summary Description:

Sea Change Foundation seeks a capable and energetic Executive Assistant who will provide comprehensive administrative support to the Foundation's Executive Director as well as its President. S/he must be able to interact effectively with these executives using discretion and sound judgment to maintain confidential information. The Executive Assistant will be a critical component of the Foundation's small team and s/he must demonstrate independence and initiative as well as an enthusiasm for the Foundation's mission.

Headquartered in San Francisco on the Embarcadero waterfront, Sea Change Foundation is a private foundation that uses targeted philanthropy to leverage the power of the market and the public sector to develop and implement innovative solutions that address the most serious challenges faced by humankind. Currently, the Foundation is entirely focused on the serious threat posed by climate change and has a $50 million annual grants budget.

Primary Responsibilities include:

Organize complex activities for the Foundation's executives, including scheduling appointments, meetings, conferences, and other engagements based on an understanding of their commitments and priorities.

Produce professional looking, accurate, and complete documents generated or required by the executives in a timely manner, using Microsoft Office and other programs. Create and develop visual presentations.

Prepare the executives for meetings and speaking engagements; create agendas and compile reference material and concise background information.

Keep the executive office organized and operating effectively and efficiently; set up systems to support same; maintain files and records.

Efficiently and courteously answer and manage phone calls, placing calls as requested. Take messages and/or field questions for the executives.

Professionally and hospitably greet guests of the Foundation, providing assistance to them, as required. Make all travel arrangements for the executives and process travel and other expenses. Handle confidential and non-routine information appropriately.

Facilitate communication between Executive Director, the President, other Board members and staff.

Act as project manager for special projects at the request of the executives, which may include: planning and coordinating presentations; disseminating information; and coordinating Foundation events.

Conduct, synthesize and report on basic research as required by the executives.

Review mail and prepare for the executives' attention or reroute to appropriate Foundation staff.

Prepare and submit program related requests, subscriptions, reimbursements/expense reports and other related internal documentation.

Navigate and retrieve information from Foundation's contact database.

Collaborate with staff to prepare summary documents containing accurate, high quality, grant and program data and descriptions for the executives.

Assist with human resource issues, such as insurance and benefits.

Handling special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

B.A. or B.S. degree strongly preferred.

Five or more years of experience in an administrative position required, with some exposure to the philanthropic or nonprofit sector preferred.

Extremely organized with high attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to plan ahead and work within deadlines.

Ability to multi-task, prioritize and follow-through to effectively manage work flow and continuously improve the efficiency of the office.

Good interpersonal skills with the ability to support collegiality in a small office.

Ability to be productive when working independently and as a member of a team.

Ability to use discretion in maintaining confidentiality of sensitive materials and issues.

High level of flexibility and responsiveness.

Excellent computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and Google products.

Interest in the Foundation's mission to address the threats of climate change.

Program Strategist

Job Description:

Program Strategists will work in a small team with the Executive Director and other staff members to help shape the direction of Sea Change Foundation’s $50 million annual grants budget. Program Strategists must be able to work effectively with colleagues across multiple disciplines, balancing the need for immediate action with the Foundation’s desire to generate maximum return from its philanthropic investments.

Responsibilities of Program Strategists:

Proactively cultivate, review, and assess grantmaking opportunities, including assisting grantees in improving the quality of their proposals.

Serve as grant lead, which includes developing potential grant concepts, presenting grant concepts to Foundation staff and Board members, collaborating with potential grantees to develop grant proposals and documents for approval, and completing due diligence activities on potential grants and grantees.

Conduct site visits of pending and active projects and travel to represent the Foundation as required.

Recommend grants for funding by soliciting peer reviews and providing critical analysis of project strengths, weaknesses and risks.

Develop progress indicators with grantees; monitor and track ongoing grants and initiatives, evaluate progress and report to staff, Board, and external colleagues on performance.

Maintain an on-going relationship with grantees to facilitate the exchange of information and maximize lessons learned

Convene meetings of stakeholders, including grantees, other funders, government officials, subject matter experts and others to share insights and coordinate strategies when possible.

Stay current on trends, emerging issues, interventions and innovations related to climate change in order to enhance the effectiveness of the Foundation’s planning and grantmaking.

Help to plan and implement learning opportunities for grantees, staff, and Board.
Work with and manage external consultants.

Ensure compliance with IRS regulations and Foundation requirements for all grants.
Complete other projects as assigned, including some related to the Foundation’s internal operations and planning.

Qualifications:

Strong record of achievement and relevant analytic and decision-making experience in the nonprofit, public, or private sector. A minimum of 6 years in the field with interdisciplinary experience favored.

Energetic, flexible, team player with a direct, honest, and respectful approach to problem solving; able to foster collaboration and contribute to a strong sense of community among staff and Board.

Undergraduate degree required; an advanced degree in a relevant field preferred.
Ability to work independently and as a team member in a collegial atmosphere where differing viewpoints and give-and-take are expected and encouraged.

Outstanding strategic thinking and planning skills.

Ability to analyze, synthesize and effectively communicate complex information.

Experience in project management.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

An understanding of key issues in the climate change field, including the policy-making process and political dynamics.

Poise, judgment, and personality; able to interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals and organizations.

Creativity in developing and implementing solutions and communicating them to diverse audiences.

Ability to park his or her ego at the door and work in the spirit of service without hubris.

Program Associate

Sea Change Foundation seeks an energetic and versatile Program Associate who will provide program and grants management support as a member of the Foundation?s program strategy team, including handling a range of administrative, analytical and research projects. The Program Associate will be an important member of the Foundation?s small staff and must demonstrate independence and initiative as well as an enthusiasm for the Foundation?s mission. S/he must be able to quickly locate, analyze, and synthesize complex information and interact effectively with the Foundation?s Board members and staff, exercising discretion and maintaining confidentiality at all times.

Based in San Francisco, Sea Change Foundation is a new private foundation that uses targeted philanthropy to leverage the power of the market and the public sector to develop and implement innovative solutions that address the most serious challenges faced by humankind. Currently, the Foundation is devoting its entire $50 million annual grants budget to addressing the serious threats posed by global climate change.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

Conduct research and analysis related to a variety of topics, individuals and prospective grantee organizations.

Generate succinct summary responses to requests for specific and/or contextual information in a timely manner.

Assist with the grantmaking process, including the production of reports, spreadsheets and other materials to be reviewed by the Foundation?s Executive Director and Board.

Help maintain accurate electronic and physical files for grantees, prospects, peer funders, and partner organizations.

Stay current on key developments, trends, emerging issues, interventions and innovations related to climate change, clean energy issues and grantmaking.

Assist with internal and external communications.

Compose substantive correspondence and memos.

Provide administrative and operational support, and coordinate with other program and administrative staff as needed.

Handle special projects as they arise and other duties as assigned.
Work with and manage external consultants.

Qualifications:

B.A./B.S. required with three years (minimum) of related work experience

Demonstrated interest and experience in climate change issues

Willingness to take direction, work independently and as a team member

Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to synthesize information

Ability to prioritize time sensitive projects

Well organized and self-motivated with a strong work ethic

Accustomed to high professional standards and expectations

Demonstrated research and analytical skills

Understanding of the philanthropy, grantmaking and nonprofit operations

Familiarity with CyberGrants or similar database programs

Proficiency in the Microsoft Office software suite and Google Applications

Flexibility and sense of humor; ability to learn and adapt within an evolving organization
